His family can be traced back to 1511 on the island.In 1962, he donated over 10,000 volumes of rare books and manuscripts, maps, and albums to the Library of Chios.This is the superior quarter paper vellum issue of the work, printed on Millbourne Hand Made paper, with their watermark to each leaf.Illustrated with a frontispiece, double-page map, and one further plate. Collated, complete.'Described in contemporary diplomatic reports', Argenti details the Chios Massacre, which took place in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence, hen Ottoman forces massacred the Greek population of Chios. It is estimated that up to 100,000 people were killed or enslaved during the massacre, while up to 20,000 escaped as refugees.The massacre devastated the island's population and economy, drawing international attention and fuelling outrage in Europe, which contributed to wider support for Greek independence.
