L'autore parte da una delle più diffuse obiezioni, con cui si contestava al cinema ogni possibilità artistica: è una mera riproduzione meccanica della realtà, si diceva, per sua natura negata a ogni raggiungimento creativo. La serrata analisi di Arnheim mostra esattamente il contrario: il cinema non ha nulla di naturalistico, l'immagine filmica differisce da quella reale. Sono proprio questi «fattori differenzianti» a costituire i «mezzi formativi» del cinema, i suoi mezzi artistici: ad esempio, quei «salti di tempo e di spazio» che il film ha in comune con tutta l'arte moderna. Originally published as 'Film als Kunst' in Berlin in 1932, the book was banned by the Nazi party and Arnheim left the country and eventually settled in the USA in 1940.
