Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Illustrated by Frank Frazetta (illustratore). 1st Edition Thus; 1st Printing. Cover Art; This is a mass market paperback book. Ace Science Fiction Book # F-296. The book is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. There is some light bumping, rubbing and wear to the spine ends, corners and book cover edges. The covers have some generalized light toning as well. The text pages are clean, but noticeably toned due to the acid content of the paper. "Arnold's Lieut. Gullivar Jones: His Vacation is considered important to 20th century science fiction literature, in that it may have inspired the Edgar Rice Burroughs Barsoom series, which was written six years later. Indeed, both Gullivar and Burroughs's character John Carter, first seen in A Princess of Mars (1917) , are military men from the Southern United States who arrive on Mars and have numerous adventures, including falling in love with a Martian princess. The character of Carter, however, has more in common with Arnold's earlier creation, Phra. Critics would say that Arnold's Martian adventure was not as well written, and the fact that Gullivar does not quite defeat his enemies or get the girl in the end helps explain why his novel not as popular as Burroughs', which was followed by ten sequels." [sic] I suppose that these politics &c, squeeze out any matter which can bide its time'. He recalls their previous meeting: 'last time was on a Sunday morning, when Theodore & I trotted from Belvedere to Sidcup [.] he, like you, has been following his father's footsteps, & has made somewhat of a name in economic edntomology'. He has shown Lester's letter to his wife, who was 'delighted to see it for the sake of your mother, who, as you may recollect, was a great ally of hers'. He wishes he could be with Lester's father, never having had the luck to see India, despite having 'always hankered to do so'. He hopes to be able to call on him, but now lives so far from town, 'that I can seldom do more than rush from one station to another, when I am on one of my regular lecture-tours'.
