In the original publisher's cream boards with hand coloured street scene by Arnoux. The songs: La Complainte du Déserteur; Cadet-Rousselle; Il était un Petit Navire; Frère Jacques; En avant Fanfan la Tulipe; Il a des Bottes Bastien; Monsieur de La Palisse; Il était un Petit Bonhomme; Bon Voyage Monsieur Dumollet; Malborough s'en va-t'-en Guerre; Le 31 du mois d'Août; Grâce à la Mode. No inscriptions, fragile paper spine slightly chipped at tail, tiny cracks at head, 45 mm (2") split to upper hinge, neatly stuck down, spine and edges of boards slightly darkened, a few minor marks to covers, lower cover slightly dusty, corners very slightly worn, endpapers foxed, faint foxing to Contents page, otherwise clean and bright. A very good copy. A later edition gives publishing information as: "Paris 83 Faubourg Saint Honoré, Martine", also undated. The only other copy of this set of plates found at Pennsylvania State (by an OCLC search) and apparently not in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France (by check of its own catalogue). N.d., circa 1920. Oblong, 29 by 36.…5 cm. Only eight of ten pochoir plates, plus decorated title. The plates depict card playing, bird shooting, fishing, dice, dancing, skating, archery and blind man's bluff, with all the elegant men and women of the eighteenth century Ancien Regime. The colors have a rich lushness characteristic of the best pochoir, and the figures are pared down and stylized yet also easily representational as in many of Arnoux's other book illusrations. Ex-lib light -- a small, neat inked number in a corner of the backs of the plates, not the least disconcerting, and no hint of ex-lib on the cover or the plate fronts. Light soiling to the cover. A few small tape repairs in the margins not coming close to the imagery.
