He wrote on European intellectual matters and authored several biographies of artists including Chagall, Modigliani, Pascin, Max Weber, Munch, and others.

Condizione: Very good. - Approximately 48 words typed on 8-1/2 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide "New York Post" stationery. In his letter, addressed to his friend City Center producer Jean Dalrymple, Lyons expresses his regrets that Jean could not make it to City Hall for the ceremony where he was awarded NYC's bronze medallion and a special scroll by Mayor John Lindsay: "It was a great honor that Mayor Lindsay bestowed on me and I shall always cherish it." Signed "Lennie". The letter is folded horizontally and vertically for mailing with some creases along the folds. Very good. Born Leonard Sucher, the American newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons (1906-1976) was a classmate of Lou Gehrig's at the High School of Commerce. Lyon graduated from St. John's University School of Law and practiced law for 5 years as he also wrote the weekly column "East of Broadway" for the "Jewish Daily Forward". Awarded a job as Broadway columnist for the New York Post, it was then that he changed his name from Sucher to Lyons and went on to write the daily column "The Lyons Den", covering theater, movies, politics and art for the paper. A New York institution, the column was picked up and distributed nationally by King Features Syndicate and later the McNaught Syndicate. In December of 1973, Lyons was awarded the city's bronze medallion & a special scroll by Mayor John Lindsay. He was again recognized for his work by Mayor Michael Bloomberg who issued another proclamation in his name on his 100th anniversary. His son, the film and theater critic Jeffrey Lyons and his grandson, the television personality Ben Lyons, continue to use the name "The Lyons Den".Jean Dalrymple (1902-1998) was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville, appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing, the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski, Mary Martin, Jose Iturbi, Andre Kostalanetz, Nathan Milstein, and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943, serving as a board member, producer, and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951, Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder, commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world.

The item begins with part of a sentence regarding 'dramatization in Paris', before turning to Spielmann's desire to have her novel 'The Sterndales of Sterndale House' (1919) filmed. She praises the recipient's 'critical faculty', adding 'The points taken are seldom just the points.' She will let the recipient's 'good opinion' of her be known 'in one or two quarters'. Having met the recipient some time before, she desires a meeting on her return to town. She ends with a reference to 'the terrible undertaking of the search for a house, as we have been homeless these past years'.

Part of page, 10 x 7cm, edges a little ragged, mainly good condition. Full text preserved: We have thought & spoken much of you music & of your kindness. | Your's obliged | Eliz. Eastlake".

12mo, 4 pp. Good, on lightly aged paper, but with a thin strip along the outer edge of the second leaf of the bifolium with glue staining from previous mounting, and a 3.5 x 0.5 piece missing at head causing damage to one word ('hers'). Otherwise text clear and entire. Cust's aunt has informed him 'that she has at present in her possession in London all the papers belonging to Sir John Cust that remain'. She does not however think that they contain much about Wilkes. Cust is 'tremendously busy' and will not be able to examine them 'for a week or two', so Bleackley might want to visit her himself ('The Lady Elizabeth Cust 13 Eccleston Square'). 'I have paved the way for you in a sense already.' Offers 'a small furnished house in town', belonging to 'my relatives, Mrs Gerald Talbot & her daughter'. Bleackley's biography of Wilkes appeared in 1917.

Quilter 'will be known to our readers as the recent art-critic of the "Times," and the gentleman who has for many years past written upon art subjects in the "Spectator". Quilter is described as 'almost the only critic of any standing who exhibits oil pictures as well as writes [with 'exhibits pictures' and 'paints as well as writes' both crossed out].'.

In Very Good condition. Blast was the short-lived literary magazine of the Vorticist movement in Britain. Two editions were published: the first on 2 July 1914 (dated 20 June 1914, but publication was delayed) and featured a bright pink cover, referred to by Ezra Pound as the "great MAGENTA cover'd opusculus"; and the second a year later on 15 July 1915. Both editions were written primarily by Wyndham Lewis. Asks if he has 'seen Tom Smith's crackers', and if so, whether he observed 'anything specially and eminently notable'. 'The packet he sent here has gone off to Brighton or Blazes, before its contents were disclosed to my eyes.' Consequently he has written 'from the point of view of total darkness'. If Ross could furnish 'a hint to which I could list, or a list from which I could take a hint, there might be time for me to pop in a line of particulars.' Gives his private address, and asks if Ross has seen his 'notice of Judy's Annual'.
