On December 17, 1891, the state-of-the-art building was gifted to the city of Philadelphia by Anthony J. Drexel, to be used for teaching art, science, and industry. The grand opening featured an invocation by Bishop Potter, an oration by the Hon. Chauncey M. Depew, the presentation of the trust deeds by the Hon. Wayne MacVeagh, and the acceptance of the deeds from James MacAlister, the Institute's president. Bishop Whitaker then gave the benediction, and the ceremony concluded with the audience singing Beethoven's majestic "Hallelujah" from Mount of Olives. Drexel's generous endowment of the Institute was a response to the educational needs of his time, and this book explores the issues that prompted his gift, such as the need for skilled workers who could operate the complex machinery of the Industrial Revolution. The author also examines the role of the Institute in the broader context of educational reform and social change.
