Includes Mars/Earth Vital Statistics; Prologue: A Message to Mars; Introduction; Appendix 1: Extract from The Mars Project: Journeys Beyond the Cold War by Senator Spark Matsunaga; Appendix 2: So Your Going to Mars?; Further Reading; Acknowledgments and Index. Profusely illustrated with color photographs, color drawings, black-and-white photographs, and diagrams. ('80 color, 20 black-and-white images, most computer generated by Arthur C. Clarke"). "Arthur C. Clarke's unique vision, accomplanied by stunning computer-generated images, shows how the planet Mars could be made habitable for humanity." - from the rear outer jacket. "More than thirty years ago Arthur C. Clarke forecast the possibility of satellite communications, Now he advances "virtual reality" into "virtual exploration," and shows how human beings might become the first Martians of science fact, not fiction, by "terraforming" the desert landscape of Mars into our first settlement in space. The technology to reach Mars is in place but the means to make its environment habitable may seem as fantastic as flying machines once did. Reminding us that innovation has always been propelled by our dreams of the future, and arguing always from established science, Clarke considers each element of the puzzle in turn, from getting to Mars in the first place to providing it with a wholly new ecology. Most exciting of all he portrays a terraformed Mars in breathtaking images he has generated on the computer. Taking as his starting point the Martian peak of Olympus, the highest mountain in the solar system, Clarke creates detailed "virtual landscapes" of the Martian surface and "preconstructs" the changes that would occur as water began to flow and vegetation to thrive. A stimulating thought experiment on a grand scale, founded in real scientific possibility, this book challenges us to re-imagine our future in the solar system." - from the inner front jacket flap.

No Binding. Condizione: Good. Arthur C. HARDY. The Optics of Sound Recording Systems. Carbon copy of an incuble of sound-on-film motion pictures, published 1 September 1928, SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal. 10.5"x 8". 17 leaves, dingle-spaced. GOOD condition, though there is a 2"x1" section missing at the bottom right corner pg 6 affecting about 10 words (?) of text. Hardy makes a big contribution here to the application of such systems as the RCA Photophone for direct sound-on-film recording at the very beginning of that era. At the time of publication Hardy was at the beginning of a long career at the MIT. "(Hardy) played some part in the development of sound recording on film, while in 1930, in collaboration with Professor S. F. Brown, he developed an electric organ which was intended to reproduce the sound of any musical instrument. It is, though, with his famous recording spectrophotometer that his name will always be associated, since it is fair to say that this instrument revolutionised industrial colour measurement."--Nature, obituary, vol 271 12 January 1978, p 194.
