Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the artistic and cultural significance of a renowned architect's city churches, positioning them within the broader context of the 17th-century Renaissance movement. The author argues that these churches represent the culmination of England's embrace of classical… aesthetics and intellectual rigor, marking a departure from the Gothic style that previously dominated. The text explores the interplay between individual expression and universal laws of form, highlighting the architect's meticulous attention to detail, unity of design, and the harmonious relationship between the churches and their urban surroundings. The author draws parallels between the architect's work and other artistic and intellectual endeavors of the time, emphasizing the shared spirit of humanism, scientific inquiry, and a desire for order and beauty. Through vivid descriptions and insightful analysis, this book offers a compelling exploration of the architect's city churches as not merely physical structures but as embodiments of the era's soul and its aspirations. By understanding the historical and artistic forces that shaped these architectural marvels, readers gain a deeper appreciation for their enduring legacy and the profound impact of the Renaissance on the built environment. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Autograph letter signed on Mackmurdo & Horne Architects headed paper, arranging a visit and an invitation to a classical concert. 11 May 1891. Autograph letter signed Arthur H Mackurdo, on the printed architectural practice paper of "Messrs Ma…ckmurdo & Horne, Architects", giving addresses at 20 Fitzroy Street, London, and 15 Lord Street, Liverpool. Single sheet folded, written on the first side only, 180 x 115 mm. Old folds, with mounting remnants to the final blank side; very good. Mackmurdo writes to accept the pleasure promised him on 28 May and asks his correspondent to keep the afternoon of 10 June free, as he is arranging for a professor to send her an invitation to "a most classical concert", which he thinks her "good taste will nicely appreciate". Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo founded the Century Guild with Herbert Horne and others in 1882, seeking to reunite architecture with the decorative arts and craftsmanship. His bold, sinuous designs are now recognised as an influence on the Arts and Crafts movement and British art nouveau style that was to come. The partnership headed paper is particularly attractive with Mackmurdo signed letters uncommon to find. Signed by Author(s).

Autograph letter signed from Simonds to Mackmurdo regarding preparations for the forthcoming Birmingham Congress of the National Association for the Advancement of Art and its Application to Industry. The…Priory Studio, April 18, 1890. Autograph letter signed, one page, 110 x 180 mm, on The Priory Studio, Lodge Place, Grove Road, N.W., headed paper, dated 18 April 1890. Addressed by Simonds to "A. H. Mackmurdo Esq, President, Section D" and signed "George Simonds, President, Section B." Old folds, a couple of small mounting tabs and light traces of former mounting to the reverse; otherwise very good. The reverse bears a few faint contemporary pencil notes in Mackmurdo's hand. An Arts and Crafts association letter documenting preparations for the 1890 Birmingham Congress of the National Association for the Advancement of Art and its Application to Industry. Simonds invites Mackmurdo to a meeting of the Sectional Officers to be held at his Priory Studio on Saturday 3 May, followed by dinner, the stated purpose being to 'determine on some united course of action for next Congress'. Founded in 1888, the National Association for the Advancement of Art and its Application to Industry was established to encourage cooperation between artists, architects, designers, craftsmen and manufacturers through a series of annual congresses devoted to the relationship between art and industry. Its meetings were organised into specialist sections, including Sculpture (Section B) and Applied Art (Section D). In 1889 both Simonds and Mackmurdo already occupied senior offices within the Association, and this letter records them serving as sectional presidents during preparations for the Birmingham Congress, the Association's final meeting. George Blackall Simonds was one of the leading British sculptors of the late Victorian period, the first Master of the Art Workers' Guild, and is best remembered for the Maiwand Lion at Reading and The Falconer in Central Park, New York. Arthur Heygate Mackmurdo, founder of the Century Guild, ranks amongst the pioneers of the Arts and Crafts Movement and is widely regarded as one of the earliest exponents of Art Nouveau in Britain. Their correspondence is uncommon, and letters directly concerning the organisation of the Arts and Crafts movement are scarce. The reverse carries faint pencil notes by Mackmurdo, giving preliminary thoughts for discussion at the meeting. Signed by Author(s).

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Mrs Gilchrist, from her friend the author, April 1884". The recipient was Anne Gilchrist, a writer and woman of letters with a keen interest in science and philosophy. Walt Whitman loved her and called her "a supreme character of whom the worl…d knows too little for its own good" (Letters, p. xxxvi). Gilchrist's marriage to the writer Alexander Gilchrist threw her into association with artists and writers of the day, including Thomas Carlyle, John Ruskin, Herbert Spencer, George Eliot, and Arthur Mackmurdo. When her husband died in 1861, she took it upon herself to finish the biography of William Blake that he had begun. It was published to much acclaim in 1863 with the help of William and Gabriel Rossetti. It was through William Rossetti that Gilchrist first encountered Walt Whitman, with whom she developed an intimate friendship. She briefly moved to America in 1876 to help him as he struggled with ill health. "I have that sort of feeling about her which cannot easily be spoken of - put into words", said Whitman "indeed the sort of feeling that words will not fit: love (strong personal love, too), reverence, respect - you see, it won't go into words: all the words are weak and formal". He recalled her as "one of my noblest, best friends - one of my wisest, cutest, profoundest, most candid critics", who understood that Leaves of Grass "was not the mouthpiece of parlors, refinements-no- but the language of strength, power, passion, intensity, absorption, sincerity" (Traubel). The title page of Wren's City Churches is "generally regarded as the first manifestation of Art Nouveau" (Rheims). It was produced under the influence of Edward Burne-Jones, Ruskin, and the Rossettis. This copy is in a later state, without the illustration on the front cover. Thomas B. Harned, ed., The Letters of Anne Gilchrist and Walt Whitman, 1918; Maurice Rheims, The Flowering of Art Nouveau, 1966; Horace Traubel, With Walt Whitman in Camden, 1906. Octavo. Mezzotint frontispiece after Mackmurdo and decorative title page. Original quarter japon, title in black on spine, brown boards, edges untrimmed. Extremities bumped and worn, darkened spine more so, binding soiled and rubbed, scratch to front cover, contents foxed, frontispiece and title-page still bright and striking: a firm copy.

January 1886 - October 1888 [and] London: The Chiswick Press, January 1889 - October 1892. 4to. 28 volumes illustrated by woodcut and photogravure, in the original printed wrappers. Expectable browning to the untrimmed edges and occasional foxing and offsetting; issue no. 9 front wrapper spotted…and rear wrapper very creased; issue 12 slight red staining to rear wrapper; issue 21 upper wrapper torn with large loss; issue 28 lower wrapper soiled and with a large chip. Despite the few flaws listed above the overall condition is in general clean and quite beautiful, remarkably well-preserved for a large format, elegant journal in its original wrappers. All enclosed in two modern cloth boxes. § A complete run of the main series of the Century Guild Hobby Horse, the first significant magazine dedicated to the visual arts in England, preceding both the The Yellow Book and The Savoy and more egalitarian than either in its mission to create a unified vision of the arts and crafts in Victorian Britain. The quarterly magazine was the collaboration of architects Arthur Mackmurdo and Herbert Horne and the designer Selwyn Image, who together formed the small but influential Century Guild of Artists. It featured essays on the fine and decorative arts, architecture, literature, typography, book design and collecting, along with much original poetry. The Guild members were clearly well-connected, particularly with the Pre-Raphaelites, and regular contributors included W.M. Rossetti, Christina Rossetti, and Frederic Shields. Oscar Wilde contributed an essay on Keats, May Morris one on embroidery, and William Morris' lecture on "The Influence of Building Materials upon Architecture" appeared for the first time in print in its pages. There is an essay by Hubert Parry on English song writing, original poetry from Matthew Arnold and Christina Rossetti, and several essays by Alfred Pollard on book design. The contributors were particularly interested in the influence of William Blake and different issues featured several very important Muir facsimiles as well as the first typographic printing of The Marriage of Heaven and Hell. A prepublication issue had been printed by George Allen for Mackurdo in 1884. After Mackmurdo and Image stepped away at the end of 1892, the magazine was renamed simply The Hobby Horse and survived for two more years before ending in 1894, the year The Yellow Book first appeared. Neither the prepublication issue, nor issues from the later incarnation are included in this series. An ambitious and quite beautiful production, suffused with the spirit of the Arts & Crafts movement, the issues are finely printed on handmade paper at the Chiswick Press, illustrated with woodcut decorations and with photogravures of notable artworks. From the frontispiece art reproduced with the permission of many famous names, to the appended directories of recommended craftsmen and women (May Morris, William Muir, W.M. Rossetti among them) the issues form a rich record of the thoughts and activities of a fascinatingly intertwined group of artists, authors, and designers, in the act of revolutionizing the visual arts in England. Complete runs like this are very uncommon in institutions and in the trade.
