Beim Sichten von Carl Liners reichem zeichnerischen Oeuvre fiel die Auswahl bereits schwer. Diese Auswahl ist subjektiv wie jede Auswahl. Der chronologische Ablauf der Entstehungsdaten der Zeichnungen war wichtiger als die Gegenüberstellung besonders geeigneter Sujets, wie dies in repäsentativen Bilderbüchern möglich ist. Innerhalb dieses chronologischen Ablaufs wird versucht, die wenigen grösseren Reisen, die Carl Liner Zeit seines Lebens unternahm, etwas breiter zu zeigen. Eine der fruchtbarsten Arbeitsperioden war die Reise nach Rom und vor allem der längere Aufenthalt in Terracina von November 1897 bis zum Sommer 1898. Von dieser Periode zeugen siebzehn Abbildungen. Weiter sind einige Skizzen von seinen zwei Reisen nach Paris (1899 und 1900) enthalten. Aus den zwanziger Jahren folgen Blätter aus den Regionen St.Gallen-Appenzell, oberer Zürichsee und Rheinfelden, um nur einige zu nennen. Mehrere Blätter legen Zeugnis von seinem dreimonatigen Aufenthalt in Ägypten ab.
