Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book analyzes the transformational period in early 16th-century English drama that birthed secular and romantic works that broke the mold of the allegorical morality play. The author examines the influences of figures like Cardinal Morton and his circle, highlighting their role i…n introducing new ideas, themes, and forms to the English stage. At the heart of this exploration is Sir Thomas More, whose household emerges as a catalyst for this dramatic evolution. Through a detailed examination of works such as "Fulgens and Lucres" and plays by John Heywood, the author argues that this group fostered a new spirit of liberation, romance, and diversity in dramatic storytelling. The book sheds light on the origins of the Elizabethan drama and emphasizes the significance of this pivotal period in shaping the landscape of English theater. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. The April, 1917 issue (Volume IX, Number 6, whole number 70). Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 42 pp.; this is a scarce survivor of the smaller-format issues (i.e., no longer folio size) which were issued late in the life The Masses. 1917… was the last year of publication, and by the time of this issue, there were only months left. Just Fair, due to the absence of the front cover and the separation of the first page from the remaining textblock with rear cover - all of which is itself in Very Good condition, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some small scale chipping on page 3 and rear cover, modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was officially shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918, ostensibly on the basis of postal regulations (though it had already suspended publication in late 1917), following two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of April, 1917 included Eastman, John Reed; Louise Bryant; Floyd Dell; Howard Brubaker; Robert Hillyer; Louis Untermeyer; Hutchins Hapgood; Ruza Wenclaw; Leslie Nelson Jennings; Robert H. Lowie; Charles W. Wood; Jane Whitaker; Anne Arnold; Henry Reich, Jr.; Dorothea Gay; Franklin Van Wert; David Rosenthal; Elizabeth Fox; and Nina Bull. Art was contributed by Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; and Cornelia Barns. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. Please see scans. l-lng2. Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; Cornelia Barns (illustratore).

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near fine. Thirteen volumes (complete), octavo size, approx. 4150 pp. Called "the gay nineties" in America and "the naughty nineties" in Britain, the decade of the 1890s was, in many respects, one in which the Victorian morals and societal codes were loosening with many who, on both sides of the pond, "emb…raced more freedom, fun, and social permissiveness" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Within the worlds of literature and art, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) and Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) were extremely influential, both with a talent for bringing eroticism into their art and making it - almost - socially acceptable. In addition to their joint collaboration on "Salome" (first published in 1892), they launched this periodical, "The Yellow Book", with its first issue being April, 1894. Beardsley was the first art editor, and while Wilde was not a contributor, his influence can be felt. Ultimately it lasted for only thirteen issues, its demise coming about for almost the same reasons as its success. The public initially saw "The Yellow Book" as "something queer and rather alarming.and thus it almost immediately regarded it as symbolic of new movements." However, after the trial and conviction of Oscar Wilde the publishers, who were from the outset less inclined towards these new ideals than the artists, combined with a reaction, now negative, from the public ("the [publisher's] premises were set upon by a mob who vandalised the building") its final issue was April, 1897 (n.b., quotes from Wiki). ___DESCRIPTION: All volumes bound in full bright yellow cloth, black illustrations and lettering on the fronts, black lettering and decorations on the spines, the table of contents reproduced on the back covers except the final issue which duplicated the design of the front, replete with reproductions of artwork (all in black and white, with a single exception); bindings octavo size (8 1/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination varies between 256 and 406; note that this set does not have the advertisements bound in at the rear. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine, the boards mostly clean (a few volumes with light spots), the corners mostly straight (a few slightly bumped), most without rubbing and a few with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges (we noted a few gutters just beginning to crack), the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; some light rubbing to the black ink on the bindings on most volumes, light toning to some of the endpapers, a few volumes with the boards very slightly bowed, and some of the spines lightly sunned (note that the spine of Vol. VI is significantly lighter in colour). ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set will require additional postage, please inquire for details. International customers, please also note that any taxes, duty, or tariffs charged by your country will, of necessity, be your responsibility. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
