Obwohl er die "neuen" Kunstrichtungen miterlebte, orientierte er sich eher an dem Impressionisten und ihrer Auffassung von Licht und Atmosphäre. 1933 kehrte er nach New York zurück. Ab 1946 änderte Stillman seinen Malstil komplett in Richtung des abstrakten Expressionismus: "For me, the world of surface realities is no longer paintable. For nothing is as it formerly seemed."
