Het gezelschap bestond uit amman Godevaert Sterck, schepen Reynier van Ursel, de auteur en verder een tiental dienaren. De opdracht bestond er in verzet aan te tekenen tegen de oprichting van een bisdom, Er was angst ontstaan dat meteen ook de inquisitie naar Spaans model zou worden ingevoerd. De auteur beschrijft in dakboekvorm de reis doorheen het door godsdiensttwisten onrustige Frankrijk en verschaft nauwkeurige informatie over de audienties bij Filips II, de koningin en don Carlos. Verder beschrijft het tal van anecdotische gebeurtenissen zoals stierengevechten een aardbeving, een Siamese tweeling, een ontmoetiong muet met inheemse prinsen uit Tlaxcala in Nova Hispania in Centraal-Amerika. Ook de reizen in Spnaje (onder meer naar Segovia, Valladolid, Medina del Camp en Toledo) worden "toeristisch" beschreven.
