The Royal Navy was quickly in action off the Korean coast and in August the first British troops arrived. A total of about 40,000 British troops served in the war. The Royal Navy, along with ships of Commonwealth countries, maintained a constant blockade of the west coast. Small units of the Royal Air Force had auxiliary duties.
