Aggiungi al carrelloSoft Covers. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. Chris Gaskin (illustratore). Revised Edition. In the late 1800s boats and ships in the Marlborough Sounds of the South Island began to notice a playful near-white dolphin that was attracted to their vessels. Soon the dolphin was regularly escorting the small steamers that ran services across Cook Strait in the sounds. For quarter-of a century Pelorus Jack, as the dolphin became known, kept up this routine, becoming world famous in the process. Photographed for papers and ,magazine and, as they say "a legend in his (or her) life time". Jack became tourist attraction too. After the winter of 1912 the dolphin was not seen again, its disappearance a mystery then, and now. Little has been written in recent times about "Jack" and when Tania Atkinson's book for children, "Pelorus Jack" was first published in 1984 (with a reprint later that year) it was the first for many years. She divided the story into five chapters which include the place of "Jack" in Maori mythology and culture, how he was placed under legislated protection by the NZ Parliament and advances theories on his demise. This revised edition published in 1995, 48 pages, new b/w illustrations by artist Chris Gaskin, including a map. Colour art card covers VG+, internally excellent, no inscriptions. This light book will be posted at cost.

Aggiungi al carrelloSoft Covers. Condizione: VG+. No Jacket. Winnie van't Hof (illustratore). 1st. Sub-titled "The Story of New Zealand's Famous Dolphin" this account of the life, times, habits and frolics of Pelorus Jack, is aimed mainly at young readers. Surprising, in view of the dolphin's fame, not a great deal of literary effort has been devoted to the "story" over the years. However, this little book tells the tale simply, but fully. The dolphin became famous world-wide for escorting Cook Strait shipping in Marlborough Sounds and into the strait. This continued for 25 years until, early in 1912, this unique specimen, protected by an Act of Government, simply vanished, a mystery never solved. First edition of 1984, 48 pages, numerous sepia tone drawings by Winne van't Hof. Colour art/pictorial card covers VG+, text block excellent, no inscroptions.
