In publisher issued full red levant goatskin with stamping in gold on the front cover and titled and tooled in gold on the spine. Binding is stamp-signed by Sotheran on the front turn-in. A handsome binding on a stately work illustrated by 32 plates (many chromolithographs). Front hinge is just starting to separate, but holding well. Half title is chipped around the edges and laid in; the frontispiece (with contemporary gift inscription on the recto) must have detached at some point and was reinserted with the illustration facing forward rather than than the title page. The loose pages are chipped and browned round the edges; there is generally some browning to the edges of the pages. Top edge gilt. The boards are a little rubbed and edge worn, but remain strong and sturdy. Internally, there is some very mild tanning around the edges throughout and edge wear to the early pages, but there are no other markings or inscriptions and the pages within are neat and complete.
