An den Germanisten Erich Schmidt mit einem Geburtstagsgruß. - Auerbach, als Sohn eines Kaufmanns in Nordstetten bei Horb am Neckar geboren, wurde als radikalliberaler Student und Mitglied einer Burschenschaft verurteilt und 1837 für einige Monate auf dem Hohenasperg in Haft genommen. Er war Mitarbeiter der Zeitschrift…"Europa" und lebte als freier Schriftsteller in Weimar, Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin, Breslau und Wien. "In seinen Romanen spiegelt sich seine liberale Ideologie und sein Eintreten für die Emanzipation der Juden wider. Seine Schwarzwälder Dorfgeschichten' (4 Bde., 1843-54) machten ihn zu einem der populärsten Erzähler seiner Zeit" (DBE). "In der Folge gelang es ihm, mit Hilfe einer sentimental zugestutzten aufgeklärten Tendenz seinen Schwarzwälder Dorfgeschichten', 'Volkskalendern' dem freisinnigen Zeitgeist entsprechend für die damalige Zeit unerhörte Auflagen zu verschaffen. Im ganzen wurden über 100 000 Exemplare abgesetzt" (Kosch I, 61). - Mit gepr. Vignette und zwei weiteren Wünschen samt U. von anderen Händen; das Datum irrig für Juni; mit alten Montagespuren verso.
