Ca. 20 x 75 mm. Auf Trägerkarton. Nach dem Studium der Rechts- und Staatswissenschaften in Wien trat Engel von Mainfelden 1878 bei der Finanzprokuratur in den Staatsdienst ein. 1883 wechselte er in das Finanzministerium über, wo er maßgeblich am Aufbau einer eigenen Budgetsektion beteiligt war, deren Leitung er 1905 übernahm. Er setzte die Umstellung der staatlichen Wirtschaftsführung auf einen budgetären Wirtschaftsplan durch und erreichte damit den Ausgleich des Staatshaushaltes. 1913 mit der Vertretung des Finanzministers beauftragt und 1915 zum Finanzminister ernannt, sorgte er zu Beginn des Ersten Weltkriegs dafür, dass der österr. Staatskredit zunächst erhalten blieb. Differenzen mit der Militärverwaltung und mit parlamentarischen Kreisen veranlaßten ihn jedoch bald zum Rücktritt.
