Peter Brown, writing in The New York Review of Books, hailed them as "sizzling"; James Wood, in The London Review of Books declared, "Augustine flourishes in Wills's hands." Now Wills has launched an ambitious and brilliant translation of four books of Saint Augustine's Confessiones, beginning with the first book, "Childhood." As only this Pulitzer Prize~winning and seminal thinker can, Wills elucidates the ideas, themes, and structure of this book, a work that has had such a profound impact on our thought, religion, and literature. A leader of the church in Africa and a prolific writer on the controversies of his day, Augustine began work on this masterpiece as a way to contemplate the greater mysteries of the Creation and the Trinity. Written in the form of a prayer, "an inner colloquy with God," as Wills puts it, the Confessiones (which Wills translates as The Testimony) reflects on the ages of man, beginning here with infancy and childhood. Augustine's discussion of language in particular in this book draws on his experience as a parent observing his son, Godsend, as well as on his dialogue with Godsend, "The Teacher," which was taken down by scribes a decade or so before Augustine began writing "Childhood." "The Teacher" is included here as an appendix. Wills's superb introduction, his illuminating notes, but most of all his exquisite and fresh translation of this classic text will richly reward anyone who is coming to this book for the first time or who has read it many times before. Future volumes in this series will include "Sin," "Memory," and "Conversion.". …
