Peter Austen worked with Prof. Hofmann in Berlin and received his Ph.D. in Zurich. Instructor at Dartmouth (1876), Professor at Rutgers (1877) before becoming president of Union Paint Co. (Newark, NJ). He taught his niece Alice Austen (1866-1952) how to develop photographs. She lived in poverty and her photographic plates were finally discovered and achieved recognition in 1950. The Alice Austen House Museum is located in Staten Island, NY.
