The book Contains 16 lush color Illustrations of the Tuscan landscape by George S. Elg…ood, and some small pen and ink drawings by William Scott. The book is now Out of Print - OP. Lamia's Winter Quarters is one of a series of beautifully illustrated travel-based books of fiction published by A. & C. Black. This one takes place is Tuscany, and it is a deeply romantic fictional discourse between three characters, interspersed with poetry. The dream-like Tuscan landscape and culture is the inspiration for their reflections. Look past the somewhat worn exterior to the beautiful plate illustrations. It's a lovely book. TITLE : Lamia's Winter Quarters AUTHOR : Alfred Austin (1835 - 1913) Austin was chosen as Poet Laureate after Tennyson's death. ILLUSTRATOR (Color Plates) : George S. Elgood (1851 - 1943 -- famous for his paintings of formal gardens) ILLUSTRATOR (Line Drawings) : William Scott IMPRINT : Adam & Charles Black Co. PLACE : London, England DATE : 1907 STATUS : OP DETAILS : Trade Hardcover; Dimensions 6.5 inches x 9 inches; red cloth-covered boards and spine, with orange and black border decorations on spine and front - gilt lettering on spine and front; contains 16 color plates (printed on calendered paper) with tissue guards; numerous line vignette drawings through the text; top edge gilt; 163 pages, plus 4 pages of ads for "Black's Beautiful Books." CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS ONLY -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Spine is a bit faded. Covers have some light spotting, small, scattered water droplet stains, a bit of smudging and a bit of weathering. Corner tips are softy bumped; top edge gilt of text-block is still fairly bright. Front cover gilt is bright. BINDING - Solid but tender: The text-block is subject to strain and is somewhat shaken due to its thickness and the heaviness of its paper stock, and thus warrants care when turning pages. Paper over front hinge is split at the head (about an inch). Rear end-paper hinge is solid. INTERIOR - End-papers are toned, especially on the rear free end-paper (this is a production effect). On the front free end-paper there is a partially obscured signature (in India Ink- we can't read the name - could be Carrie). There is evidence of a minor mending to the attachment of the frontispiece (neatly done and of no real effect). There is some light scattered foxing and a bit of smudging to the interior - this last most obviously on the backs of a few plates. Pages 68 - 76 have a strip of serious toning from a previous owner's leather bookmark. Those pages are still readable, despite a vertical stripe of darkening. For the most part the interior is clean and presentable. The color pictures display brightly, although the tissue guards are darkened. At the bottom edge of the front paste-down is a bookstore label : (F. W. Chaundy, Bookseller, 104 High Street, and 36 Broad Street, Oxford). George S. Elgood & William Scott (illustratore).
