Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Gut. 488 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Dust jacket a bit rubbed, somewhat skewed, otherwise a good and clean copy. - The aim of this book is to collect in one volume a substantial and representative selection of ancient sources in translation, with commentary, on the history, institutions, society and economic life of the Hellenistic world from the reign of Alexander the Great to the late second century B.C. - that is, from when the Greek world expanded considerably through Alexanders conquest of the Persian empire to the time when Rome became the predominant political force in that world. The area covered includes Macedon and mainland Greece, the Aegean, Asia, Syria and Egypt. Fringe areas such as the Black Sea and Bactria are also included where appropriate, but less fully. The sources selected include literary sources, numerous inscriptions from almost all parts of the Hellenistic world, and papyri from Egypt. The sources themselves are supported by introductory commentary, notes, bibliographies, chronological tables and maps. This is the first comprehensive sourcebook in English concentrating entirely on the Hellenistic age. Teachers and students will welcome its appearance since it makes available to them for study a period which previously lack of translated material has made difficult of access. Dr Austins translations of a large number of inscriptions are especially valuable in this connection. ISBN 9780521228299 Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 711 Original cloth with dust jacket.

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst editions, volume one is a second printing, volume two is a first printing. Illustrated card covers. Illustrated throughout with black and white line drawings by Mervyn Peake. Volume two has a miniature book affixed within it, as issued. Very good copies, the bindings firm, volume one's covers are lightly toned and it is a little nicked at the foot of the spine. Volume two has a few tiny spots to the covers and some creasing and rippling to the top corner of the text block, which is also visible on the internal margins. The contents are clean and without previous owners' stamps or inscriptions. The miniature book in volume two is present and in fine condition. A collection of children's stories about the diminutive Tom Thumb, characterfully illustrated by Mervyn Peake. The books were intended for the use of Swedish children who were learning English, and both volumes have an English to Swedish vocabulary section at the rear. Paul Britten Austin wrote the Tom Thumb tales as a pastiche of the classic British children's stories he read as a child, and this informed his choice of illustrator; he wrote that Peake's "drawings produced the authentically English impression I was looking for Peake is about as British as can be in his drawing style, and his imagination too is utterly sunk in what might be called the 'ghosty' aspect of Britishness".
