Soft cover. Condizione: Poor. Here is an old issue of Ballou's Monthly Magazine, being Volume XLI, No. 4, published in 1875. The magazine was very popular in its day. The contents present an assortment of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. The condition of this issue is rough, but it is complete, and offers a touchstone of sorts to the past. This is the original issue, just as published, with sewn wraps. (Please read our full condition report, given below.) The essay on the Nithsdales is, on its own, worth the price of admission. The earl had joined the Jacobite rebellion. He was captured at the Battle of Preston, and hence imprisoned. TITLE : Ballou's Monthly Magazine ISSUE : Vol. XLI, No. 4 DATE : April 1875 EDITOR : Maturin Ballou (American Journalist and Author , 1796 - 1895 … son of Hosea Ballou, first president of Tufts College) IMPRINT : Thomes & Talbot PLACE : 36 Bromfield Street, Boston STATUS : OP DETAILS : Contains few woodcuts and one page of silhouettes; advertising on the insides of the cover, front and back; volume pages 305 - 400 (96 pp); 6" x 9", pictorial wraps, sewn; cover edges are extended a bit (yapp edges). The pages are trimmed irregularly. CONTENTS : -- Verona (Italy) . with one woodcut -- The Confident a poem, with woodcut -- The Parrot Tribe, With 2 woodcuts -- The Whale Fishery- with 1 woodcut of a stranded whale -- Disinherited ! - or, The Mystery of the Headlands, a Story of the New Jersey Coast by Etta W. Adams -- A Woman's Story - a complete story - by Cora Chester -- Along the Road . a poem by C. Nye C. -- Story of the Countess of Nithsdale (the royalist Maxwells of the western Scottish border) . an anecdotal family biography by Prof. Seranos D. Patrick. [ The Countess of Nithsdale was famous for engineering the escape of her husband, William Maxwell, 5th Earl of Nithsdale, from the Tower of London in 1716 ] -- The Three Fortunes - A complete story by Mary Helen Boodey -- Will She Marry Him ? continuation of a serialized story by Florence Marryat -- Deus Omnipotens a poem by Albert Roland Haven -- April Weather - a complete story by Carrie D. There is a central, vertical crease. BINDING : The thread is holding, and while the contents are intact, the issue as a whole is fragile. INTERIOR : Stains, smudges, and scattered foxing are throughout; the leaf with pp 389 & 390 has a very old tape mend on the bottom edge - this leaf was sliced cleanly, cutting the bottom portion of the taped text, which has been saved and lays between the leaves. AS I HAVE SAID, THE CONDITION IS ROUGH. Old wood-cuts (illustratore).

Original Wraps. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket, as Issued. First Edition. Antiquity is an illustrated journal of Archaeology with engravings, line drawings, photographs and occasional folding maps and plans, covering a wide variety of subjects pertaining to archaeology. The journal was published quarterly (now bi-monthly), and was established in 1927 by the British archaeologist O. G. S. Crawford. The journal was originally published in 29 volumes, between 1927 and 1955, with 116 separate issues. This copy of Antiquity is Volume XVI, No. 61: March 1942. ***250mm x 184mm. pp.1-96 (96 pages). ***Please see accompanying scans for list of contents of this issue. ***An unusually near fine copy in cream card covers with a flat spine, printed in black and light-brown. The covers are extremely clean - hardly marked at all. Spine lightly browned as usual but completely intact. Internally also near fine, with no inscriptions or other annotations. No foxing. No creases or tears. No stains. ***A near fine copy of Volume XVI, No. 61: March 1942 of Antiquity - one of 58 separate issues we are gradually listing on ABE - in the original cream card covers. This copy is extremely well preserved for its age, especially being published in wartime, and crammed with interesting articles - all well illustrated. A fascinating read for those interested in the subject of archaeology and history in general. ***Please see the first photo scan of the cover to ascertain the contents of this issue. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
