The two leaves of the bifolium on which the letter is written have been separated, and each bears minor evidence of mounting on the blank reverse. He thanks Ashford for allowing him to 'look through your very interesting collection of autographs', which 'does equ…al credit to your energy and to the good nature of mankind in general'. He continues: 'The pages of an autograph book always make me realise that people are not so crabbed and disagreeable to each other as pessimists imagine or profess to believe. Even to a busy man it is no waste of time to give a few seconds in order to gratify or give pleasure to others.'.

Aggiungi al carrelloFor such a prolific author, it is odd that so little is to be gleaned about Dorothy Jarman (1902-1978; Fellow of the Institute of Arts and Letters, widow of Roy H. Jarman), who claims in this letter, written as 'Dorothy Desana', that 'Ann Trent' is her pseudonym, while in the 1971 edition of 'The Author's and Writer's Who's Who'…, 'Ann Trent' is given as her real name, while 'Dorothy Desana' is one of four pseudonyms. Whatever the case, twenty-six books were published under the name 'Davide Sernicoli' between 1936 and 1953, with twenty more books published by her under other names. The recipient Eileen Cond was an enthusiastic collector of autographs, and had the ability to draw a more than perfunctory response from her targets. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged and creased; folded twice. Signed 'Dorothy Desana'. She begins by saying that she is glad that her book 'The White Squadron' has given Cond pleasure, before continuing: 'If you are interested in books with North African or "Mediterranean" backgrounds you may like some of my novels, all of which are set either in Libya, Algeria, Italy, France, Spain or the islands of the Mediterranean Sea. So far, I have had forty eight novels published, using the pseudonyms Davide Sernicoli and Ann Trent. My next novel, THE UNFORESEEN HAZARD, will be published by Robert Hale under my latest pseudonyn, [sic] Ann Carlton.'.

Nichols regrets not seeing the recipient 'again before I left the Institution on Tuesday, to thank you for your kind attention' [Upcott was sub-librarian at the London Institution]. He is sending him a proof (presumably of an article in the Gentleman's Magazine), 'that you may see what I have said about yo…ur Album, and also what about modern collectors, and make any emendation you think fit in either place'. Discussion of 'the earliest Album in the Museum', about the date of which the recipient has been misled by a misprint. 'Your oldest I supposed to be the large quarto one, with the date 1591 on the binding: but I find Mr Smith [John Thomas Smith (1766-1833), Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum] made this memorandum | 1565 to 1590 | William | John Pfeiffer. | Have you then an older one?' If not suggests that the album 'might be new bound in 1591'. Two-line note on third page asking for the proof to be returned 'soon by 2dy. post.'.

My series of Letters by Clergymen are on my shelves in four goodly tomes- hence the paucity of duplication.- Should chance at any time throw any of them in my way - I'll not forget your hobby - I say yours - because mine- like an exhausted Volcano has ceased to emit any flame. | . In good condition, on lightly aged paper extracted from a notebook. Signed at foot: 'William Upcott / a collector and preserver of Autographs. / London Institution / Finsbury Circus…. / January 17. 1834'. The four memoranda are neatly written out over fifteen lines in Upcott's distinctive hand. (But compare the other item by him, with same watermark, offered separately, in what is clearly his best hand, and more like type.) First: 'An Hour well spent is worth a Life. When we reflect on the Sum of Improvement and delight gained in a single hour, how do the multitude of hours already past, use and say "What good has marked us?" Wouldst thou know the true worth of Time, employ one hour.' The second memorandum concerns happiness, the third daily improvement, and the last employments.

The year before the present letter, he had represented Ahmed Urabi after an uprising in Egypt, earning himself 10,000 guineas and the nickname 'Broadley Pasha'. At the time of writing he was acting as English agent…and legal adviser of the ex-Khedive Ismail, who had been deposed in 1879 and was living near Naples (although at the time of writing he was clearly in London). 2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with strip of tape from mount adhering to second leaf. Folded once. Signed 'Henry W. Lucy' and addressed to 'Dear Mr Broadley'. Marked 'Private'. He starts by stating that he has answered Broadley's telegram. He continues: 'The publication in the Daily Telegraph of an interview with Ismail Pascha bars us, & I expect other papers, from following suit, even though the interviewer got nothing out of his Highness, whose skill in dealing with the critical question I greatly admire.' He hopes Broadley will 'explain to his Highness my great appreciation of the honor done me in inviting me to see him tomorrow.' He explains that he is declining the invitation as 'no practical good would result just now', but that he hopes that he can see him again later and 'have some talk'. He winds up the letter by offering to place 'any announcement you would like to make known in his interest' if Broadley will write to him. 'I suppose that in London & the Provinces I have the widest channel of communication with the public open to any individual journalist'.

And The Lorelei is to be made this summer on the Rhine as a film.' He is sorry to learn that she has given up her restaurant in Honiton, 'Deer Park': 'It was a lovely place and without doubt the finest English cooking we've found.' He ends by informing her that his wife has returned to California for the winter, on account of her health. 'So I'm alone with the two poodles.' Eileen M. Cond was an enthusiastic collector of autographs.

The letter gives a good impression of Upcott's questionable character, well-described in Janet Ing Freeman's entry on him in the Dictionary of National Biography. It reads: 'My friend will not part with his Autograph of O. Crom…well He purchased it for 5 Guineas the usual price To his signature in my possession is attached that of his Secretary Thurloe by no means a common Autograph Dr. R. wants it I don't wish either to leave my Collection yet I will dispose of both for 4 pounds, - taking the chance of replacing it Edward Vith. I cannot hear of Mine as before stated cannot be taken from the Series of Royalty as it is particularly described in the printed Catalogue of Original Letters and State Papers in the possession of | dear Sir | Yours very faithfully | William Upcott'.

In France she met the much younger aspiring artist Marc Favrat, who became her lover and whom she made her equerry and adopted in the year of her death.

Sandor was clearly a generous fellow, and Norris was a lucky one. Sandor has responded to a request for an autograph by sending a note topped by an attractive miniature graphite dr…awing of the head and shoulders of an 1890s young lady, more subtle than a 'Gibson Girl', staring quizzically with the distinctive hairstyle of the period. Beneath the drawing he writes: 'Mr Howes Norris Jr | Dear Sir | It is flattering to me [last word underlined] to be asked for my autograph. Your letter of the 17 of this month is the first I have received from you | Yours truly | Mathiás Sándor'. A collection of Howes Norris Jr's cartoons is at Syracuse University.

Upcott, Esq.' Upcott has been 'so kind as to invite Mr Fields and me to spend an evening with you in going over some of your Literary treasures', and Rodd has 'an…indistinct idea of some particular evening being named' by Upcott. In the hope that the present evening was not intended, he asks Upcott to send word of which evening will suit his convenience. In a long postscript Rodd expresses the hope that - should the present evening have been intended for the meeting - Upcott will excuse Rodd's forgetfulness, 'and impute it to the right cause the [having?] of one's thoughts in a Sale-room, added to which I had been travelling all the previous night'. Rodd was highly regarded for his knowledge and fair dealing. He issued several catalogues of Americana. 'Mr Field [sic]' was presumably James Thomas Fields (1817-1881) of the celebrated Boston firm Ticknor and Fields, who started in the trade at the age of fourteen, and whose name was 'Field' until later in life.

In good condition, on lightly aged paper extracted from a notebook. Signed at foot: 'William Upcott / London Institution, / Finsbury Circus. Jan. 18. 1834.' Very neatly written out…in Upcott's best hand, which is more like type (including the signature) than the document offered separately, on the same watermarked paper. Headed: 'It is a common fact, that among the thirty four English Sovereigns who have reigned since William the Norman, tho' each of the eleven months has witnessed the accession of one or more of these Monarchs, not one has ascended the Throne in the blooming month of May.' A dramatic, almost novelistic correspondence, regarding 'the Signora' (named in the second letter as 'Mme Sineo', who is staying at her house in Torquay and is apparently too frail to return to her London house. Letter One: Docketed 'No 1'. 12mo, 4 pp. Peard states that she has not 'wr…itten of late about the Signora. She has got fairly well again, but she does not seem to us fit to return to London, & I hear that her doctor does not think she ever will be fit. This she does not know, & you must not let out!' As her 'best friend', Mrs Cole will know whether 'she would be better off if she had only one home'. 'She is a very difficult person to advise, & is easily offended. I believe she has never been angry with me, but then I am very cautious! [.] One lady here, too (a friend of mine) has always pleased her, & has been very kind.' Letter Two: Docketed 'No 2. Do not return any of these | S C'. 12mo, 3 pp. She thanks her for her 'long & explicit' letter, which puts me fully in possession of the case'. She has written to Madame Sineo's doctor, 'saying I had only heard that he did not think she could ever return to London, & if that was his opinion suggesting it might be better for him to tell her so, on account of her rooms in London.' The doctor's answer 'does not take any responsibility!' Peard then states: 'I do not want it [i.e. responsibility] again.' The kind lady has given Madame Sineo '£5 at Xmas, & £3 last week, & no doubt others have assisted her'. Peard does not think 'we can do anything about her going back to London'. She ends by congratulating Mrs Cole on her son's book. The identity of 'the Signora' is unclear, but the Athenaeum, 11 January 1862, carries an advertisement for Italian teaching by 'Professor and Madame Sineo-Benaducci' of 17 Northumberland Place, Westbourne Grove.

Note: "The detection of forgery a practical handbook for the use of bankers, solicitors, magistrates' clerks, and all handling suspected documents" by Douglas Blackburn and W Waithman Caddell, indicating the latter's interest in autograph material, whether dealer, collector, handwriting specialist or some of each.
