Aggiungi al carrelloContiene una vera fotografia con 4 velivoli. Il numero 601 Squadron à uno squadrone delle Riserve della RAF, con sede a Londra. Lo squadrone prese parte alla Battaglia d'Inghilterra, durante la quale i primi americani a volare nella seconda guerra mondiale furono membri dello squadrone. Lo Squadrone n. 601 fu formato alla RAF No…rtholt il 14 ottobre 1925 quando un gruppo di ricchi giovani aristocratici, tutti aviatori dilettanti, decisero di formare uno Squadrone di Riserva della RAF dopo un incontro al White's Club , Londra. Gli ufficiali originali furono scelti dal primo ufficiale in comando, Lord Edward Grosvenor , figlio pià giovane di Hugh Grosvenor, primo duca di Westminster . Grosvenor ha testato le potenziali reclute somministrandole alcol per vedere se si sarebbero comportate in modo inappropriato. Grosvenor voleva ufficiali "di presenza sufficiente per non essere intimiditi da lui e di mezzi sufficienti per non essere esclusi dai suoi passatempi preferiti, mangiare, bere e bianchi". Lo Squadron era inizialmente conosciuto come "lo squadrone dei milionari", una targhetta guadagnata grazie alla reputazione di riempire i loro ranghi con i "benestanti". La maggior parte di questi giovani piloti benestanti aveva poca considerazione per la rigida disciplina del servizio regolare; rivestivano le tuniche dell'uniforme con seta rosso vivo e indossavano cravatte blu anzichà il nero regolamentare. Giocavano a polo su motociclette Brough Superior nuove di zecca, guidavano auto sportive veloci (si diceva che il parcheggio dello squadrone assomigliasse a un Concours d'Elegance ) e la maggior parte dei piloti possedeva il proprio aereo privato.
