Ce modèle, exposé surtout dans la littérature de type normatif, a donné lieu à quantité de variantes : il ne s'est jamais réalisé à l'état pur dans l'histoire des sociétés musulmanes. Ce livre veut démentir des clichés trop répandus : soit la vision, née à l'époque coloniale, d'un patriarcat étouffant ; soit celle, développée par l'apologétique islamique contemporaine, d'un modèle immuable défini par la loi islamique. La Famille en islam recourt à des sources arabes de type varié (sources religieuses, traités juridiques, biographies, hagiographies, discours éthique et prescriptions éducatives) pour retracer modèles et discours à l'époque médiévale, tout en les confrontant à l'état de la recherche. Le vocabulaire arabe de la parenté dans les sources anciennes permet d'historiciser des notions complexes. L'usage des noms dans la famille suggère la richesse des relations familiales. Les rapports entre famille, parenté et droit sont un pan considérable du sujet dont un aspect particulier (l'histoire des doctrines juridiques autour de la parenté de lait) montre à quel point l'histoire du droit musulman nourrit celle de la famille. L'islam médiéval connaissait la notion d'enfance et les sentiments parentaux s'expriment, de façon touchante, à travers de nombreuses source d'époque mamelouke. L'étude des familles de saints, à commencer par celle du Prophète, enrichit notre connaissance des familles en Islam, modèles et réalités.
