Gemeint sind Geschichtswerke, die in dem Gebiet des modernen Staates Libanon von einheimischen Autoren über ihr Land verfaßt wurden.… Die leitende Fragestellung betrifft das Verhältnis zwischen Geschichtsschreibung und Ideologie bzw. Geschichte und Identität. Im Kontext der wichtigsten historischen Entwicklungsfaktoren, der Auseinandersetzungen zwischen soziokulturellen, religiösen und politisch-ideologischen Strömungen sowie der Rolle von Erziehung und Wissenschaft werden historische Schriften von sehr unterschiedlicher Tendenz systematisch analysiert, sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal. Besondere Aufmerksamkeit gilt dabei dem historischen Selbstverständnis innerhalb der libanesischen Gesellschaft, bzw. der verschiedenen Konfessionsgemeinschaften, und dem Problem eines allgemeinen, übergreifenden nationalen Geschichtsbewußtseins und Geschichtsbilds. Kontinuität und Wandel in der libanesischen Historiographie erweisen sich als Produkt und als Spiegel der libanesischen Geschichte. Das untersuchte Material umfaßt akademische Veröffentlichungen und populärwissenschaftliche Schriften der letzten einhundertfünfzig Jahre, ferner unveröffentlichte Manuskripte von zeitgenössischen Historikern und vom Verfasser durchgeführte Interviews, vor allem in Beirut während des Bürgerkriegs und in den 1990er Jahren. It is concerned with historical works on Lebanon written by native authors who lived or are living in Lebanon. The study seeks to examine the interdependece of histirography and ideology on the one hand and of history and identity on the other. The material studied includes scholarly publications and popularised works from the last 150 years, of which a considerable part is confessional writing of members of the different communities (Maronites, Druzes, Sunnis, Shi'is etc.).
