Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. A conversation across time and space connecting words, images and ceramics from Edmund de Waal and Axel SaltoRenowned artist and writer Edmund de Waal (born 1964) meets acclaimed Danish ceramist Axel Salto (18891961), considered one of the greatest masters of 20th-century ceramic art. Salto… was a poet and critic, artist and textile designer, whose workmuch like de Waal'splays on the memorial, the expressible and the intangible, and the ability or lack of language to define these feelings. Both men's multifaceted practices interact in harmony in this delicate, thoughtful book. Playing with Fire begins with excerpts from Salto's writings, including poems, design treatises and more, illustrated by archival copies of his publications from the 1930s and 1940s. In the latter part of the book, de Waal responds to Salto's life and legacy in a meditative essay, while we watch him at work in his studio. Admirers of contemporary ceramics or de Waal's bestselling memoir The Hare with the Amber Eyes will be enthralled with this moving publication. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Det Gyldne Aesel, (The Golden Ass) by Apuleius, translated from Latin by Otto Gelsted. Illustrated by Axel Salto. Pub. Athanaeum, Kobenhavn, 1942 first ed. 237 pages. b/w 7 woodcuts. One of 100 copies (This being no. 59) specially bound in half leather with decorated paper covers to… include an original signed etching by Axel Salto. The etching is bound in as the frontispiece. Additionally signed by Salto on the limitation page. In Danish. The binding is in about fine condition. Gilt titles to spine. The leather has variations of colour giving a slightly sprinkled effect. A very nice book in the hand and to the eye. Salto [1889-1961] was known primarily as a ceramicist. The Golden Ass is the only Latin novel from Ancient Rome to have survived. It's episodic, picaresque form following the adventures of the hapless, Lucius as he is transformed by a misfiring spell into a mule, a change which gives him insight into the conditions of the lower classes. The book's influence on Western literature has been profound and one can see echoes of it in Cervantes, Shakespeare and Chaucer.

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Kusai's Haendelser (The Adventures of KusaI) Illustrations by Axel Salto. Pub. Berlingske Bogtrykkeri, 1934. First edition. Signed in pencil at the front of the book to the publication details. Small folio. Cream, paper-covered boards with cloth spine, woodcut illustration to the fr…ont panel.Minor grubbiness, merest touches of edge wear.Patterned endpapers, designed by Salto. A lovely copy of this rare title recounting the tale of a boy in Africa called 'Axel' but known as Kusai. He relates to animals, whose speech he begins to understand and helps a wounded deer. Then he falls in with a boy called Nogo. Salto [1889-1961] was an important figure in Danish art, a Modernist, who published an influential magazine for two years called Klingen. By the time he published Kusai's Haendelser, he was already established as a leading ceramicist, which would be the main focus of his artistic vision. This title, however, showcases his mastery of the Expressionist woodcut. A rare title, it is tempting to see in the fairytale something autobiographical - why else write that the boy is called 'Axel'? Perhaps he took elements of his own childhood and transplanted them to Africa? In any case, the book is exceptionally rare and the woodcuts with occasional coloured blocking speak to Salto's direct and striking style. Signed by Author(s).

First edition, signed by the artist. 16 woodcuts, cover and endpapers by Axel Salto. An expressionist-inspired children's book, "Kusai's Haendelser" presents the creations of Danish illustrator Axel Salto, one of the…great names of the Scandinavian avant-garde. It represents the artist's first creative phase, before he moved on to painting and ceramics. The story takes the hero, Axel, nicknamed Kusaï, into the heart of African nature. The young boy gets lost and encounters various animals, including a turtle, a deer and a snake, whom he bravely helps. The engravings and text interact to create an illustrated adventure in just a few pages. In 1934, Axel Salto became artistic director at the Royal Copenhagen porcelain factory and was awarded a prize at the Paris International Exhibition a few years later. While continuing his work as a draughtsman and wood engraver, he exhibited his ceramics throughout Europe. With fruit and plant forms, observation of nature is his primary source of inspiration.
