Die Ära barocker Gelehrsamkeit, mitgeprägt durch so bedeutende Juristen wie Hubert Giphanius aus den Niederlanden, wird ebenso angesprochen wie die Aufklärung, als Johann Adam von Ickstatt die Universitätsreform einleitete, Johann Georg von Lori die Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften in München begründete und der Kirchenrechtler Adam Weishaupt Ingolstadt zur Keimzelle des Geheimbundes der Illuminaten machte. Mit der Landshuter Romantik, repräsentiert durch Namen wie Johann Michael Sailer, Friedrich Carl von Savigny oder Andreas Röschlaub, weisen manche Lebensläufe bereits in die Epoche der frühkonstitutionellen Monarchie in Bayern.Die 1031 biographischen Artikel werden ergänzt durch einen aus Archivalien erhobenen Anhang von Christoph Schöner zur Strukturgeschichte der Artistenfakultät 1472-1526 mit einem Verzeichnis von 359 »magistri regentes«, die während ihres Studiums der Medizin, Jurisprudenz oder Theologie als Lehrer der Propädeutika, teils auch als Bursenkonventoren oder Präzeptoren wirkten. Kopfregesten enthalten Namensvarianten und biographische Eckdaten, sofern möglich mit Angaben zur familiären und sozialen Herkunft. Abrundung finden die Artikel durch Hinweise auf ungedruckte Quellen, Werktitel und Forschungsstand sowie Porträtnachweise.
