Il disegno preparatorio è in collezione americana con attribuzione dubitativa a Pirro Ligorio (1513 - 1583), architetto e antiquario napoletano ma attivo a Roma per la famiglia Este di Ferrara. La Z nel monogramma potrebbe indicare il nome Zoan, suggerendo così l'origine veneta dell'autore. La ricchezza della composizione ha fatto si che catalogatori e storici dell'arte fornissero varie interpretazioni del soggetto. Dora e Erwin Panofsky propongono di vedere la cieca Pandora che, aprendo l'elaborata cassa in basso a sinistra, libera il Bene e il Male. Il Bruillot (1780 - 1836) invece, da storico dell'arte specializzato in incisione, interpreta la composizione come personificazione delle Scienze che illuminano lo spirito dell'uomo. I libri contenuti nella cassa recano i frammenti dei titoli incisi DEBLE, ZO, PORTAG/GO, rispettivamente De Bello Gallico, Zoroastro e Protagoras e Gorgias, cioè rimandi alla letteratura romana, del vicino oriente e greca. La sapienza, a sua volta personificata dai numerosi serpenti, allontana l'ignoranza e la superstizione, rappresentati dai pipistrelli che volano via e dall'uomo con le corna di capra che scappa sulla destra. La donna con la mano sinistra sembra aprire gli occhi per accogliere più luce, cioè, più sapere possibile. Nella parte alta della composizione la luce trionfa sulle tenebre: da destra assistiamo all'arrivo del carro di Apollo che mette in fuga il giovane nel cielo stellato che personifica la notte. Al centro una fascia con due segni dello zodiaco: l'acquario simbolo di fertilità e i pesci nuovo inizio. In basso nella fascia inferiore a sinistra data e monogramma: ZBM 1557, a destra D.B. DB sono le iniziali dello stampatore e incisore francese Dominique Barrière (1620 - 1678). Ottima impressione nitida dai riflessi argentei, ricca di contrasto, rifilata alla battuta del rame. Esemplare nel  II/III con l'aggiunta del monogramma dello stampatore D. B. in basso a destra ma prima dell'aggiunta della tavoletta in basso a destra contenente il monogramma dB e la data 1643. Si conosce un esemplare in cui la data è stata corretta in 1576. Filigrana: lettere GM/R entro cerchio sormontato da trifoglio (nord Italia, metà XVI secolo) Un altro esemplare è conservato presso la pinacoteca Repossi di Chiari; uno presso la National Gallery of Art a Washinghton; uno a Pavia, un altro presso la raccolta del Museo di Faenza.
