Ersten Unterricht erhielt Bamberger an der Berliner Akademie bei G. Schadow und bei dem Marinemaler W. Krause. Seit 1830 in Kassel bei J.Gg. Primavesi, seit1832 in München unter dem Einfluß C. Rottmanns. 1835 in Frankfurt am Main, wo er zeichnerische Aufnahmen aus dem Main- und Rheintal für Stahlstiche anfertigte. 1836 folgte eine Studienreise nach Nordfrankreich und England. 1837-1840 verbrachte er seine Militärzeit in Würzburg. Es folgten die für sein künstlerisches Schaffen so wichtigen Reisen nach Spanien (1846, 1851 und 1863), daneben Aufenthalte in Oberbayern und Oberitalien.

Bis auf einen Braunfleck im Himmel gut erhalten. Bildmäßig ausgeführte Zeichnung. Seine künstlerische Ausbildung erhielt Bamberger um 1828 an der Berliner Akademie bei Johann Georg Schadow (1764-1850) und anschließend im Atelier des Marinemalers Wilhelm Krause (1804-1864). Nach dem Umzug der Eltern 1830 nach Kassel, wurde er dort Schüler des Hof- und Dekorationsmalers Georg Primavesi (1764-1855). Entscheidend für seine künstlerische Entwicklung war jedoch ein Aufenthalt 1832-1833 in München, wo er mit dem Werk Carl Rottmanns (1797-1850) bekannt wurde, der gerade im Auftrag König Ludwigs I. an dem italienischen Freskenzyklus für die westlichen Hofgartenarkaden arbeitete. Ab 1835 lebte Bamberger längere Zeit in Frankfurt am Main, immer wieder unterbrochen auch von längeren Aufenthalten in seiner Geburtsstadt Würzburg. im Hause der Familie des später geschätzten Landschaftsmalers Karl Peter Burnitz (1824-1886), der durch Bamberger wesentliche Anregungen für sein erst um 1849 begonnenes Zeichenstudium erhielt. Noch bevor sich Bamberger Anfang der 50er Jahre in München niederließ, unternahm er 1849-1850 seine erste Spanienfahrt, der noch mehrere folgen sollten. Vor allem die auf dieser Reise entstandenen Landschaftsbilder brachten ihm in München rasch großes Ansehen. 1844 unternahm er eine Studienreise nach Paris. Weitere Fahrten nach England und Südeuropa folgten, wo er wie in Spanien zahlreiche Werke schuf. 1871 ernannte ihn Ludwig II. zum Professor, 1872 zum Ehrenmitglied der Münchner Akademie.
