Illustrated with color photography on almost every page. The first archaeological survey carried out in Tripolitania dates back to 1910. It was carried out by Federico Halbherr, celebrated epigrapher. His collaborator, the historian Gaetano De Sanctis of the Italian mission in Crete, had both just made a campaign to lay the foundations of a permanent Italian presence in Benghazi. During the following year, the Salvatore Aurigemma, archaeologist, and Francesco Beguinot, will return several times to Tripolitania. Aurigemma then discovered the important necropolis christiana of Ain Zara, near Tripoli. When Italy occupied Tripolitania and Cirenaica, after the Turkish war (1911-1912), it was given charge of the antiques of the region, a service created within the Ministry of Colonias. Lucio Mariani was first given the powers of inspection and then the superintendant of monuments and antiquities of Tripolitania, which had its headquarters in Tripoli and the creation of an analogous structure in Cirenaica based in Benghazi. These first years of occupation brought remarkable surprises to archaeologists discovering the famous Aphrodite of Cyrene, the necropolis of Forte delia Vite in Tripoli, the Artemis of Ephesus and the town of Zli-Ten by the sea.
