As Mistress of Turkey Court in Kent, Mrs. Whatman wrote down detailed household instructions for her servants, adding to them wherever necessary throughout the following twenty-four years. The Housekeeping Book, which is now published for the first time, gives a fascinating picture of life 'below stairs' in one of the great eighteenth-century houses.".
