En esta novela de combate, aclamada internacionalmente, el autor narra la historia de la participación de un grupo de jóvenes estadounidenses que se unieron a la Brigada Internacional, y que lograron detener al fascismo a las puertas de Madrid. En sus páginas relata que la primera sección norteamericana que llegó a España fue la Sacco y Vanzetti, integrada después en el Batallón Abraham Lincoln.
