Edward Bancroft was a Massachusetts-born physician and chemist who became a double agent, spyin…g for both the United States and Great Britain while serving as secretary to the American Commission in Paris during the American Revolution. On July 14, 1763, after fleeing his apprenticeship, Bancroft left New England for the sugar-producing slave colonies of Dutch Guiana, where he became a plantation doctor. He soon expanded his practice to multiple plantations and wrote a study of the local environment. Based on observations of experiments already being performed on live eels by Dutch colonists in and around Surinam and Essequibo, Bancroft concluded that American eels and torpedo fish discharged electricity to stun their prey, rather than by imperceptibly swift mechanical action, as had previously been argued. Although he left South America in 1766, he published An Essay on the Natural History of Guiana, in South America in London 1769, where with the encouragement of Benjamin Franklin, he embarked on a career as a man of letters. The especial subject of the author's inquiries regarding the Indians, is the nature and use of the Wourali Poison, with which their weapons are charged. Condition: Moderate wear, hinges cracked with front cover detached, minor foxing, minimal damp-staining, early owner's signature on title page, later owner's bookplate on front pastedown else a good copy, internally very good.

Age toning t…o the page edges and end papers, smart bookplate inside belonging to one Robert Montgomery on board the 'Convoy'. Bancroft worked as a spy for Benjamin Franklin in Britain before the Revolution, and while serving as secretary to the American Commission in Paris. On 14 July 1763 he departed the colonies for British Guiana, where he became a doctor on a plantation. He soon expanded his practice to multiple plantations and wrote a study of the local environment. His discovery that the torpedo fish discharged electricity is notable, he also noted the transmission of yaws by flies on page 385 of this book. Bancroft grew tired of South America and left in 1766. He spent a year travelling between North America and South America before leaving for London. During the latter period, he was also a spy for Britain, reporting on dealings between France and the United States. Member of the P.B.F.A. GUYANA [Guiana].

In this letter, written to Allsops Bindings, Bancroft accepts the terms from his publisher in releasing an updated edition of the ".Philosophy of Colours," in full: "I am willing to accept the terms on which you propose to publish my work on the Philosophy of Permanent Co…lours, requesting only that you will allow me to take such copies not exceeding thirty or forty, as I may wish to give them to persons not likely to become purchasers.charging me for them the average cost of paper, printing, etc. In regard to the copies which it may be advisable to print, I think they should not be fewer than those of the former edition viz one thousand. Whether it may be prudent to increase the number to fifteen hundred is a question which I submit entirely to your consideration & decision. Should it suit Mr. Sidney to begin printing on Monday next and to call or send for a part of the work on Saturday or Sunday, if more convenient to himself, I shall be ready to deliver." Small chip at the top left corner; fraying at the bottom left corner; one-inch closed tear in the top margin. Very good(-) condition. Scientist, physician, and British "double agent" during the American Revolutionary War. As a scientist he published the scholarly book "Experimental Researches Concerning The Philosophy Of Permanent Colours," released in 1794 and updated in 1813. As a spy he was recruited by his close friend Benjamin Franklin, who never revealed whether or not he suspected Bancroft of treason.
