"A unique collection depicting Bedouin life in Qatar during the years just before the oil economy dramatically changed this traditional form of livelihood" (p3). Original colour illustrated paper covered boards 23x30cm. (2), 145pp illustrated throughout in colour and b/w, with Preface by QMA Chair Al Mayassa Bint Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, introduction, and captions in English and Arabic. Covers near fine with some light scratches, interiors fine. With contact already established through the archaeological work initiated by PV Glob and Geoffrey Bibby, Danish photographer Jette Bang (1914-64) and ethnographer Klaus Ferdinand (1926-2005) were able to spend two and a half months with Qatari Bedouin. They focused on two groups. The Al-Na'im maintained sheep and goats and covered relatively short distances within Qatar relying on motor vehicles. In contrast, the Al-Murrah only raised camels (their own, and those belonging to the Rulers of Qatar) and migrated much further afield. The photos, selected from Moesgard Museum's collection of over 2,200 images, are arranged into themes of the expedition; Dohah and al-Rayyan; North Qatar - among Al-Na'im; and South Qatar - among Al-Murrah.
