Auch in der soziologischen Systemtheorie wurde ihr wenig Beachtung geschenkt - weil, so meint man, eine funktional differenzierte, globale Weltgesellschaft kein Zentrum und entsprechend keine… Peripherie hat. Eine postglobale Gesellschaft etabliert sich aber langsam auf der Grundlage der Differenz Zentrum-Peripherie und »erfindet« die Region - eine Konstruktion, die dem Sozialen gegenüber dem Politischen und Ökonomischen den Vorrang gewähren wird. Die Begriffe Zentrum, Peripherie, Region und ihre Bedeutung werden zuerst transdisziplinär analysiert. Es wird mit der bio-soziologischen Phantasie eines »Zentrums des Lebens« beginnen. Dann werden nacheinander die mythologische Kosmologie, die humane Geographie, die Theologie, die Religion und die Kirche unter die Lupe genommen. Der begriffsanalysierende und beschreibende Teil wird mit den Kultur- und Politikwissenschaften fortgesetzt. Dem Zentrum- und Peripherieproblem im »realen Sozialismus« wird eine besondere Beachtung geschenkt. Der Anthropozentrismus mit Teilhard de Chardin und Plessner führt dann in den zweiten, soziologischen Teil ein. Der Zentrumsbegriff in der Soziologie, in der Systemtheorie, in der Autopoiesis und im Konstruktivismus führen zu einer »semantischen Spurensuche« weiter, wo sowohl die dialektischen als auch die differenztheoretischen Aspekte der Problematik neue Konturen gewinnen: nämlich die Regionalisierung des Sozialen. Im Sinne der Systemtheorie werden der Sozio-Region hypothetisch drei Deutungen zugeschrieben: als nichttopographische Sinnregion, als neue Kommunikationsform innerhalb der Sozialsysteme und schließlich als neues Funktionssystem in der globalisierten Gesellschaft. Dies ist strukturell an Wirtschaft und Politik gekoppelt und behauptet durch ihr neues symbolisch generalisiertes Kommunikationsmedium (Teilen und Intervenieren als protosoziale Kommunikation) seinen autopoietischen Charakter. Die These wird aufgestellt: Wir sind auf dem Weg zur postglobalen Gesellschaft. Sie ist ein polyzentrischer, sozio-regionaler, vernetzter und evolutionär neuer Gesellschaftstyp, der das hierarchische Zentrum verliert, die benachteiligte Peripherie abbaut und die inklusionsbereite Region erfindet.
