It lacks some examples of important Plains gear, among them, painted tipi covers and painted rawhide shields, and has few early (pre-1860) specmens. Like many other small Plains collections in museums throughout the country, it includes a number of excellent but little known specimens. It is the purpose of this catalogue to bring these pieces from the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology to public attention. A second purpose of the catalogue is to present methods of documentation through which curators of small museums may be aided in placing their unattributed pieces in a framework of time and place."
