The results of the numerous excavations, large and small, are as extensive as their findings are n…ew and significant: the oldest evidence of Christian architecture, mighty monasteries, or the development of palaces and towns were equally the subject of archaeological research as were skeletons and food waste, which provide much information about the diet, economy and beliefs of the population at that time. Newly discovered walls, pits and finds provide insights into everyday life in town and country. They also bear witness to hardships as well as ingenious innovations in mining, shipping and crafts. In this book, for the first time, Barbara Scholkmann and Fabian Brenker present a summary of many of the new insights into the world of the Middle Ages gained through these excavations. They include rural settlements - with house, farm, field and pasture - as well as the palaces and royal courts as places of residence of the rulers, such as Rottweil. An extensive chapter is devoted to urban archaeology, with results, among others, for Ulm (the only major medieval city in the South West), for Freiburg (founded by the Zähringers), for the episcopal city of Constance and, last but not least, for the state capital of Stuttgart. Archaeological research on castles yielded interesting results into the development of aristocratic representation and exercise of power. The overview of religious archaeology includes churches, monasteries and convents; cemeteries and church burials were investigated as part of an archaeology of death. In addition, archaeologically researched evidence of medieval Jewish life is assembled. Extensive new discoveries are set out for craft and commercial production. In addition, there are findings on trade and traffic, by water and by land. Finally, the spectrum of new knowledge on material culture, the multitude of everyday objects, their practical use and their social significance is particularly diverse. The book is prefaced with a comprehensive overview of the history of research into medieval archaeology in Baden-Württemberg, and concludes with an evaluative commentary on the findings available at present. All in all, this work presents a comprehensive overview of archaeological research into the Middle Ages in Baden-Württemberg conducted thus far, not only providing parallel medieval disciplines with very well-prepared information on the current state of research, but also offering an important basis for future research approaches, priorities and evaluations for archaeologists themselves. 413 pp. Deutsch.

Panamá) have been published. The Spanish colonial town of Panamá la Vieja, was founded in 1519 and was the first city on the pacific coast. It was a centre of the Spanish colonial empire with vast strategic and economic importance until it was destroyed by English pirates in 1671 and at this place subsequently abandoned. Numerous ruins, especially of large buildings such as the cathedral, the abbey churches and some secular buildings, have been preserved until now without being disturbed by modern development. Thus, the ruin city represents an ideal field of research for archaeological investigations. Six campaign excavations were carried out in the city’s former hospital San Juan de Dios as well as in a large building complex, which were used for the handling of goods. At the west end some sondages were conducted to get information about structures in the outlying district. The entire area of the city was prospected geomagneticallyand a topographic map was produced for a large part of the terrain. Several ruin-complexes were measured and examined by archaeologists specialized in architecture. The recovered find material was reviewed and subsequently catalogued and classified parallel to the excavation work. The entire stock of finds from older archaeological investigations was also documented in the context of a post-doc project. With the aid of statistic analyses and patterns of find distribution it was possible to research questions concerning social structure, functional differentiation and the area inner-structure of the city. The results from the hospital were evaluated and the different find groups of the material culture were presented in the context of several academic theses. In the process some of the manifold and very interesting aspects were thematised which the first Spanish town on the Atlantic seaboard, abandoned in the 17th century and today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can offer to European historical archaeology.

Barbara Scholkmann und Fabian Brenker legen in diesem Buch erstmals eine zusammenfassende Bilanz vieler durch die Grabungen neu gewonnenen Einsichten in die Welt des Mittelalters vor. Dazu gehören die ländlichen Siedlungen mit Haus, Hof, Feld und Weide ebenso wie die Pfalzen und Königshöfe als Aufenthaltsorte der Herrscher, z.B. Rottweil. Ein umfangreiches Kapitel widmet sich der Stadtarchäologie mit Ergebnissen unter anderem zu Ulm, der einzigen mittelalterlichen Großstadt im Südwesten, zur zähringischen Gründungsstadt Freiburg, der Bischofsstadt Konstanz und nicht zuletzt der Landeshauptstadt Stuttgart. Die archäologische Erforschung von Burgen ergab interessante Ergebnisse in die Entwicklung adeliger Repräsentation und Herrschaftsausübung. Die Bilanz zur Sakralarchäologie umfasst Kirchen, Klöster und Stifte; Friedhöfe und Kirchenbestattungen wurden im Rahmen einer Archäologie des Todes untersucht. Daneben werden auch die archäologisch erforschten Zeugnisse mittelalterlichen jüdischen Lebens zusammengestellt. Zu Handwerk und gewerblicher Produktion können umfangreiche neue Entdeckungen beschrieben werden. Dazu kommen Ergebnisse zum Handel und Verkehr zu Wasser und zu Lande. Ganz besonders vielfältig ist schließlich das Spektrum an neuem Wissen zur materiellen Kultur, der Vielzahl der Alltagsgegenstände, ihrem praktischen Nutzen wie ihrer gesellschaftlichen Bedeutung. Vorangestellt ist ein umfassender Überblick über die Forschungsgeschichte der Archäologie des Mittelalters in Baden-Württemberg, eine wertende Stellungname zu den bisher vorliegenden Erkenntnissen bildet den Abschluss. Insgesamt liegt mit diesem Werk eine umfassende Bilanz der bisherigen archäologischen Erforschung des Mittelalters in Baden-Württemberg vor, die nicht nur für die mediävistischen Nachbardisziplinen eine sehr gut aufbereitete Information über den aktuellen Forschungsstand bietet, sondern auch eine wichtige Basis für künftige Forschungsansätze, Schwerpunktsetzungen und Bewertungen im Fach selbst bietet.
