Bound in full mottled calf. A informative and innovative guide to eighteenth-century botany, written by French physician, translator and botanist, Jacques Barbeu-Dubourg. Known for a number of significant contributions to science and medicine, in particular for inventing the "Carte Chronogrpahique", an umbrella fitted with a lightning conductor.This particular work surrounds the botanical world in 1767, with focus on botany in Paris. Volume I contains two texts, with separate paginations, one detailing a new method of botany, and the second containing a catalogue of typical garden plants. The second volume presents the various plants found in the surroundings of Paris. With the half title to Volume I and the blanks retained. With two pages of errata to Volume I and four pages to II.Ink inscription dated 1792 to title page. Bound in full mottled calf. Externally, generally smart, with rubbing and bumping to the extremities, causing slight loss to board corners. A few small worm holes to volume I backstrip. Joints are slightly cracked. Front hinges are strained, a little tender. Label to front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with an ink inscription to the title page and the occasional further ink notation. Good. book.

Final edition of this little collection of 102 maxims and reflections forming a perfect abridged statement of the philosophy of the Enlightenment.'Both signatures a and b have had the first leaf of each cancelled; no located copy still has them present' (Echeverria & Wilkie). After the half-title and title the numbering of the prelims is: vii-ix, verso of ix an unnumbered blank page, ix again, verso numbered xii, xv-xxiv. This is a copy with a5r numbered ix (see Echeverria & Wilkie). The dedication is 'A Monsieur B.F. (i.e. Benjamin Franklin). The first edition was published in 1774 and a second one was printed in 1782 in Paris on the press of Benjamin Franklin. Livingston (19) writes: 'It was again printed in 1789, a close copy, typographically, of Franklin's Passy press edition, and this is the only edition recorded in the Catalogue of the Bibliothèque Nationale (1914).' This is the first major edition in French of Franklin's work, the result of a long correspondence between the translator and the author . The first part is entirely devoted to his work on electricity and contains also texts which were not previously published in English. The second part contains papers on a variety of subjects and also some texts which never appeared in English editions ; notably his thoughts on colonial matters.
