Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1995 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Technical University of Berlin, course: PS David Lodge, language: English, abstract: When thinking about David Lodge and parody, Nice Work might not be the first novel that springs to mind. This is because the generally accepted conception of parody is that of an imitation of a model text, be it a particular piece of writing, the style of an author or the literary modes of a particular period, with the underlying intention of mocking and ironizing the target text. According to this, the natural association would be Lodge's The British Museum is Falling Down, with a slight deviation as far as the author's intentions are concerned. The concept of ridicule, which can be traced in most of the parodies in the history of this genre since Aristophanes, is not an inherent feature of parody. The mockery does not always go at the expense of the text parodied, as we can see in the case of The British Museum is Falling Down, which is rather a homage to the background texts. It is the issue of the 'ethos of parody', which can be ironic, ridiculing, didactic or reverential. This wide 'pragmatic range of parody' results from the ambivalent meaning of the Greek word 'para', which means both 'opposite' and 'beside'. Linda Hutcheon suggests that 'it is this second, neglected meaning of the prefix that broadens the pragmatic scope of parody in a way most helpful to discussions of modern art forms (.). With this in mind, I shall approach Nice Work along the lines of Daniel Ammann's definition of parody as an 'activation or flirtation with an intertext (.) sustained over longer stretches(.)' as well as of Linda Hutcheon's statement that 'parody(.) is a repetition with difference.' Defined thus broadly, it meets my conception of Nice Work as a non-standard parody. By this I mean that it is not a homogeneous rewriting of an original (with a 'difference' , of course), as Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey is a parody of the Gothic novel, neither is it a consistent mosaic of parodies mimicking the originals according to one principle as The British Museum is Falling Down does, and on that account it becomes a parody homogeneous on a higher level.…

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1995 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,3, Technical University of Berlin (Institu für Englische und Amerikanische Literaturwisenschaft), course: George Bernard Shaw, language: English, abstract: This paper concentrates on Shaw's understanding of history as it is manifest in his chronicle playSaint Joan. The attempted examination will be carried out along three aspects which are quiteclearly discernible yet closely intertwined. Broadly speaking, these aspects could be called:1. The historical; finding out how close is Shaw to the historical facts of which he was in fullknowledge.2. The dramatic; leaving aside the obvious 'Stage Limits of Historical Representation' (Shaw'sown wording in the Preface to the play) it shall be shown how Shaw exploits optimally thedramatic potential of Joan's story.3. The didactic; this term being used for the sake of argument to cover Shaw's social, politicaland moral concerns. In the following chapters these three aspects will be shown in their mutual relation wherebyattention will be paid to the question of their eventual hierarchy. What was Shaw's main goalwhen writing Saint Joan Did he intend to tell what happened in France in the first half of the15th century Did he want to write a parable conveying pungent social criticism without havingto be too explicit Or did he just feel like writing a good play which Saint Joan undoubtedly is In other words, I will try to work out the intentions underlying the interplay of the aspectsmentioned above and show how these are determined by Shaw's weltanschauung, which is to sayby his philosophical/religious conception of the creative evolution. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 1998 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut für Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: James Joyce's 'Ulysses', language: English, abstract: How do writers make their figures perceive the world they inhabit To answer this question would amount to writing a book along the lines of Franz K. Stanzel's Narrative Situations in the Novel, which is clearly not my ambition. Eve n narrowing the scope down to one writer or even a single book, in the case of Ulysses, it wouldn't make things much easier. But there seems to be a consensus among Joycean scholars that there is one way typical of Joyce, in which fictional characters can achieve an understanding of their experiences. 'Epiphany is the name of the game and there is hardly any reader of Joyce who would not be acquainted with this concept in one way or another. Although no invention of Joyce's, the word is today associated primarily with him, and has since enjoyed great popularity exceeding the literary context. In this paper, I will trace the origins of this theory in Joyce's early writing and examine how it can be applied to Ulysses. I see two approaches to some such undertaking. First, there is the explicit theory that Joyce formulated in what came down to us as the fragment Stephen Hero. Using Stephen as a mouthpiece for his own aesthetic theories, Joyce applies Thomistic aesthetic philosophy to everyday perception of the world surrounding his juvenile alter ego. This theory is later expanded and accordingly modified in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Rather than relating this theory solely to Stephen and following his artistic and philosophic development in Ulysses, I intend to examine moments that correspond with Stephen's aesthetic notions, even where other characters, or, perhaps, no characters at all, are involved. In this attempt, I deem it necessary to draw on Joyce's own collection of Epiphanies, a book not published in Joyce's lifetime, which was, however, later presented to the public, despite the fact that the extant pieces form only a fragment of Joyce's original notes. Stanislaus Joyce remarks: 'This collection served him as a sketchbook serves an artist.' Should, or could, these sketches be regarded as Joyce's theories put into practice Some motives from the Epiphanies were incorporated into Ulysses, modified accordingly. Even though the 'sketchbook' was exploited to a much greater degree in Stephen Hero and Portrait, the fact that some of the 'genuine epiphanies' found their way into Joyce's writing two decades after they had been jotted down, is significant enough for the correspondences to be examined.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. …

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu.

Even though the 'sketchbook' was exploited to a much greater degree in Stephen Hero and Portrait, the fact that some of the 'genuine epiphanies' found their way into Joyce's writing two decades after they had been jotted down, is significant enough for the correspondences to be examined. 28 pp. Englisch.…
