Condizione: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 304 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Television has changed drastically in the Soviet Union over the last three decades. In 1960, only five percent of the population had access to TV, but now the viewing population has reached near total saturation. Today's main source of information in the USSR, television has become Mikhail Gorbachev's most powerful instrument for paving the way for major reform.Containing a wealth of interviews with major Soviet and American media figures and fascinating descriptions of Soviet TV shows, Ellen Mickiewicz's wide-ranging, vividly written volume compares over one hundred hours of Soviet and American television, covering programs broadcast during both the Chernenko and Gorbachev governments. Mickiewicz describes the enormous significance and popularity of news programs and discusses how Soviet journalists work in the United States. Offering a fascinating depiction of the world seen on Soviet TV, she also explores the changes in programming that have occurred as a result of glasnost.…

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. Octavo, 288pp., illustrated. About very good in the publisher's grey cloth, lacking the dust jacket. Light staining to boards, some old tape ghost to the front endpapers, and the front inner hinge thinly cracked, but holding. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by Barkley on the front free endpaper: "To Herndon J. Evans, a good Kentuckian, and a good friend, with highest regards and appreciation. Alben W. Barkley." Barkley was the 35th Vice President of the United States, serving under Harry Truman. A Kentuckian himself, he had a long career as a liberal Democratic Senator, supporting the New Deal throughout Roosevelt's presidency. Herndon Evans was editor of the Pineville Sun, a Kentucky newspaper. He was deeply interested in labor relations in coal country, a fact reflected by his extensive archive, which is retained by the University of Kentucky. …

Aggiungi al carrelloFirst edition, first printing, signed by the author on an inserted blank. Barkley served as 35th Vice President from 1949 to 1953. He had previously represented Kentucky as a Democrat in the House of Representatives and then the Senate from 1913 to 1949. He was a widely popular figure, and Truman selecting him as his running mate is seen as a major contributor to his surprise victory against Thomas Dewey in the 1948 presidential election. His memoir, occasioned by his 77th birthday, tells his story from his humble beginning as a janitor working his way through college to the top of the political system. The tone is humorous, anecdotal, and somewhat rambling. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With dust jacket. Brochure for the book loosely inserted. Very slight rubbing at extremities; unclipped jacket with minor chipping at extremities. A near-fine copy in very good jacket.…

Aggiungi al carrelloBarkley, Alben W. Personal handkerchief associated with the thirty fifth Vice President of the United States, who served under Harry S. Truman from 1949 to 1953 after more than a decade as Democratic leader of the Senate. Barkley joined Truman on the Democratic ticket in the 1948 election and entered office on January 20, 1949; his vice presidency followed congressional service extending back to 1913 and placed a longtime Senate majority and minority leader in the administration during the Korean War and Truman's Fair Deal legislative program. White linen handkerchief embroidered in one corner in blue thread with Barkley's initials, "A W B." The handkerchief is accompanied by a notarized certificate of authenticity stating that it came from Barkley's estate. The certificate supplies the stated provenance connecting the monogrammed personal article to Barkley; no further chain of ownership is asserted here. Barkley served as vice president from 1949 until 1953 and subsequently returned to the United States Senate, representing Kentucky until his death in 1956. A personal article bearing his embroidered initials and accompanied by notarized documentation of estate origin preserves a tangible association with a political career spanning the Wilson through Eisenhower administrations and encompassing congressional leadership, the Truman presidency, and the postwar Democratic Party. In excellent condition.…
