George Washington 'Barney' Crile, Jr. (1907-92), was an influential and innovative American surgeon, and a significant influence on how breast cancer is treated, advocating lumpetomy rather than radical mastectomy. His hobby was scuba diving, and with his first wife Jane Halle, Crile was able to help in the salvage of the 'Ivory Wreck', a slave ship that was lost off Loo Key in the 1700¿s. Among many artifacts retrieved from the wreck, the most significant were multiple silver bars and ivory tusks. This book records the salvage.

Barney Crile, a surgeon, was an early advocate for less radical surgical interventions in treatment of breast cancer (lumpectomies and simple mastectomies). This book is a memoir of his adventures with his late wife, Jane, who died of cancer in 1963. Not long after her death, Crile married Helga Sandburg, daughter of teh celebrated American poet and chronicler Carl Sandburg. This book is uncommon signed by Dr. Crile.
