He subsequently joined the Ceylon civil service and then was assistant government agent of Colombo. He left the island in 1849 to become the private secretary of George V of Hanover, the last king of Hanover and the father of King George III of Britain. From 1858-59 and 1866-69 he was a Lord-in-Waiting [a member of the Royal Household].…
