Folio (37cm). Contemporary half-calf over marbled boards; coated endpapers; [2]pp preliminary text ("Avertissement") and 77 leaves of plates, printed recto-only; two folding. Also included here (though not called for in the table) are two large albumen photographic facsimiles, one reproducing a rendering of the interior of the Hagia Sophia; the other a facsimile of a fragment of a map of the Holy Land. Scuffing to the leather spine, causing some cosmetic damage but not affecting the volume's structure; board edges rubbed; a few of the plates folded and/or mildly frayed at corners and margins, one with a tissue-paper repair in margin; still a fresh, attractive example, Very Good or better. Collated and complete. A rather charming atlas of maps and plates intended to illustrate biblical history. Of the seventy-seven plates, seventeen are maps; the remainder are divided between architectural views and plans, city views, and depictions of life in pre-Christian and early Christian history, including coinage, tools, modes of dress and transportation, as well as darker subjects such as methods of torture, capital punishment, imprisonment, and depictions of various false idols.
