Nach dem Tod s…eines Vaters (1875) ging Barsch selbst bei einem Tischler in die Lehre und zwei Jahre später als Geselle auf Wanderschaft, zuerst nach Goldberg, wo es ihm gelang, einen Zeitungsredakteur für seine nachts unter der Werkbank geschriebene Lyrik zu interessieren und erstmals ein Gedicht zu veröffentlichen.
