Chr. nachgewiesen werden kann, beginnt diese in Westeuropa frühestens im späten 4. Jt. v. Chr. in einer Zeit, in der im Osten ein Rückgang festzustellen ist. Auf der Iberischen Halbinsel lässt sich ein Innovationschub mit Indikatoren für soziale Eliten erkennen wie aufwändige Grabbauten, reiche Grabausstattungen sowie erstmalig Kupfer- und Goldfunde. Besonders im Süden gehören dazu große befestigte Siedlungen wie Zambujal (Estremadura, Portugal). Die dortigen archäometallurgischen Untersuchungen sowie Prospektionen kupferzeitlicher Minen ergaben zwischen Serra d'Ossa, südlich von Estremoz (Portugal) und der westlichen Sierra Morena (Spanien) das Herkunftsgebiet des Erzes. Zu diesem Ergebnis gelangte ein von der DFG finanziertes Projekt, das 2005 in der hier veröffentlichten internationalen Tagung am Alqueva-Staudamm (Moura, Portugal) mit Spezialisten diskutiert wurde. Die frühe Metallurgie in Zambujal ist vor allem Gegenstand der ersten Aufsätze während sich die anderen Beiträge dem weiteren Umfeld sowie methodischen Problemen der Montanarchäologie und Experimenten widmen. Es zeigt sich gegenüber älteren Auffassungen, dass die Innovation des Metallhandwerks wirtschaftlich-existentiell noch keine große Rolle spielte.
