Rencontre assyriologique internationale sollte ein derartiges Thema von Philologen und Archäologen gemeinsam behandelt werden. Die größte Schwierigkeit, die einem solchen positiv zu bewertenden Vorhaben entgegensteht, ist der unterschiedliche Denkmälerbestand in beiden Disziplinen beziehungsweise die ungleichwertige Aussagekraft der einzelnen Gattungen. Neben einer echten Fundlücke, die im Bereich der Archäologie größer als in der Philologie ist, hängt dies wohl in erster Linie damit zusammen, daß die Themen- und Motivauswahl in der Literatur eine andere ist als in der Bildenden Kunst. Das Beispiel Gilgames verdeutlicht wohl am besten diese Situation, und in gewisser Weise vergleichbar ist auch die unterschiedliche Themenwahl bei Oper und Schauspiel im 19. Jahrhundert. Selbst innerhalb einer »Kunstrichtung« bestehen so z.B. beim Rund- und Flachbild Unterschiede dieser Art. Sie beruhen vor allem auf den jeweils andersartigen Gestaltungsprinzipien. Erzählenden Themen wie historische Ereignisse, die häufig in der Reliefkunst und der Malerei abgehandelt werden, weil die Gattung des Flachbildes durch den gegebenen Hinter- oder Untergrund eine Reihung der Begebenheiten zeitlich wie räumlich zuläßt, finden in den Werken der Rundbildkunst weniger Beachtung. Hier überwiegt die Vorhebe zum Allegorischen, Symbolhaften, anstelle der Erzählung die Manifestation eines Ausdrucks als Beter, als Herrscher etc. Von nicht geringerer Bedeutung ist in dieser Frage auch die Tatsache, daß es neben der schriftlichen Fixierung von historischen Tatbeständen oder religiösen Spekulationen eine mündliche Tradierung von tatsächlichen oder erfundenen Ereignissen gegeben hat, und schließlich sollte man nicht außer Acht lassen, daß in einigen Religionen nur Eingeweihte, die zum Schweigen verpflichtet waren, an Kulthandlungen teilnehmen durften.
