Illustrating the Dramatic Works of Shakespeare." published by Boydell, London, 1803. In 1789, the publisher John Boydell opened the Shakespeare Gallery, an exhibition space in London's Pall Mall showcasing paintings that exclusively represented scenes from Shakespeare's plays. The Gallery was a bid to revive 'history painting' (the practice of depicting scenes from the Bible, mythology or the classics) in contemporary British art, a genre thought to be of great public benefit because of its morally instructive messages. What better unifying theme for such a project than the works of Shakespeare, which had become so popular and so integral to British identity by the mid-18th century? The Gallery opened in May 1789 with 34 canvases by 18 British artists. By the next year there were 55 paintings and in 1796 the total was 84, along with dozens of 'Small Pictures'. Once the exhibition was mounted, reproductive engravings of the paintings produced by an in-house team of 46 printmakers were available to purchase, either as a large portfolio of 90 prints or as a luxurious illustrated edition of the plays. A single sheet near fine original antique engraving 8.5 inches by 11.5 inches Size (inside the frame 16.5 inches by 19 inches) one of a large series of engravings by Francesco Bartolozzi, an Italian Engraver (1727-1815) after the original drawings by Hans Holbien (1498-1554), official painter to King Henry VIII, which are now in the Collection of the Crown. Print. Condizione: A nice contemporary copy. Separately issued stipple engraved portrait of Cook from a painting by John Webber. The painting was done in Capetown, South Africa in October-November 1776, on Cook's third and final voyage. Cook looks intently towards the artist Webber. His hair is dark; in other portraits, he wears a white wig. The effect of the small central oval portrait on folio paper emphasizes Cook's intent gaze and his mastery as a captain. How he mis-stepped in Hawaii, where he was eventually murdered, has puzzled many, some suggesting illness overcoming his skill, level headedness & experience. 'Painted at the Cape of Good Hope by J. Webber" beneath left side of the image, and "F. Bartolozzi R.A. sculp" beneath the right edge. "Published as the Act directs, June 4th, 1784, by J. Webber, No. 312, Oxford Street." Print. Condizione: Very good condition. First printing. The separately published image by Webber of one of the iconic images of the 18th century. Cook, already a successful navigator, was immortalized after his death at the hands of Hawaiian natives at Karakakoa Bay. Cook had spent two months on the Big Island in 1779 and was well received, the natives believing he was a god. When he was forced to return due to a damaged mast, he was viewed as a mortal who had already sorely stretched the supplies of the Hawaiians. It is also thought that his handling of the natives was uncharacteristically brusque, leading to conjecture that this consummate traveler's judgment was somehow impaired. The extended title- "To the Right Honourable the Lords Commissioners for executing the Office of Lord High Admiral of Great Britain & c. This Plate representing The Death of Captain Cook is humbly inscribed. By their Lordship's most obedient and devoted Servant, John Webber".
