Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: Good. 1st. (GER) Presued 1st edition, Owner's inscription to half title, small crease to corner of cover, touch of waviness to portion of top margin of pages, thus Good used copy. Wraps, 170pp, B&W reproductions of exquisite portraits made with large format cameras, augmented with B&W photos and illus. Hiroshi Sugimoto photographs wax figures of Henry VIII and his wives. These wax figures are based on portraits from the 16th century and when taking the picture Sugimoto attempts to recreate the lighting that would have been used by the painter. Focusing on Madame Tussaud's in London, its branch in Amsterdam and a wax museum in Ito, Japan, Sugimoto took three-quarter view photos, using 8-by-10-inch negatives, of the most realistic wax figures. They are typically taken against a black background. There is a fold-out of a recreation of the Last Supper. The text is entirely in German. (3.3 JM LVR 200/b1 Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12". Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: VG+. BW illustrated glossy glued wraps, 170 pp., many BW illus., two fold-outs. Issued in conjunction with several 2000 exhibitions of portrait work by Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (b. 1948). With five thematic and illustrated essays. Includes a chronology, exhibitions history, and bibliography. "Japanese artist Hiroshi Sugimoto is renowned for his elegant photographic series of seascapes, theaters, museum dioramas, and Buddhist statuary. His new series presents life-size, black-and-white portraits of historical figures -- Henry VIII and each of his wives, Voltaire, Benjamin Franklin, Oscar Wilde, and Emperor Hirohito, among others -- photographed in wax museums, isolated against black backgrounds, and dramatically lit so as to create haunting Rembrandtesque images. The series, which also includes a 25-foot, five-panel photograph of a wax effigy of Leonardo's Last Supper, emulates the grand tradition of portraiture and recalls the wax figures' sources in famous paintings by Holbein, David, Van Dyck, and Vermeer."
