Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This engrossing book explores how Baselâs prominent collectors pursued their passion for art in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuriesâ"amassing remarkable personal collections that laid the foundations for the city's renowned art museums today. The author traces the evolution of collecting habits from early print connoisseurs to the emerging art market and the arrival of Romanticism, Gothic Revival, and the rise of Swiss art and nationalism. Detailed analysis of personal journals, inventories, and correspondence reveals the personalities, motivations, and interconnections of these dedicated collectors, their influence on the art market, and their lasting contributions to art collecting and public display in Switzerland. The book provides a fascinating glimpse into the intertwining of art, commerce, and civic life in Basel, shedding light on the dynamic interplay between private enthusiasm and the preservation and appreciation of art for generations to come. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
